What’s in a cover story?

The cover of the new tune book shows John Kirkpatrick jumping over a park bench on Hampstead Heath, and is based on the original black and white design created by photographer Janet Kerr for John’s first solo LP – Jump at the Sun – issued by Trailer Records in 1972. Thanks are due to Janet Kerr for allowing use of her copyright image, and to Bill Leader of Trailer Records for giving his blessing.

Janet Kerr now spends her time partly as a painter - she is a member of The Royal Watercolour Society, whose website at www.royalwatercoloursociety.co.uk will direct you to her current work – and partly as a fiddler playing traditional American music.

So how do you sum up a life spent playing music - you write it all down!

With 137 titles, the book has all John’s tunes, with chords, notes, and discography of where you can find where he has recorded them (well, nearly all of them).  And the inside covers are full of photos of his journey from fledgling melodeon player to squeeze-box aficionado supreme .

And, of course, the famous Jump at the Sun

One of the first tunes that John ever wrote, which came to him whilst walking over Wimbledon Common, the tune has become so famous that it is recorded by all sorts of artists and groups, many of whom think that it is a traditional tune.

Well, here it is to prove that it was he who wrote it!
